Dylan Thomas festival to take place in 2014

A new festival is to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Wales' most famous writer Dylan Thomas, who was born in 1914.

Organisations can put forward proposals and apply for funding assistance to take part in the events being lined up for Dylan Thomas 100, which will take place throughout the year.

"We envision a year-long celebration of the life and work of Dylan Thomas which shows Wales as a home for artistic excellence and a beautiful, inspiring land, looking towards the future, and competing on a world stage," the organisers said.

The festival is being dubbed a democratic "symphony of voices", with events in both English and Welsh.

Thomas, who died in 1953, was inspired by south west Wales, writing most of his poetry before the age of 20 in his childhood home in Swansea. His work was also shaped by visits to Wales' Gower Peninsula and rural Carmartheshire. His famous poem Under Milk Wood was written in his final home in Laugharne.
