The Casual Vacancy is the name of J.K. Rowling's new adult novel, out 27 September

A tantalising press release from Little, Brown - J.K. Rowling's new publisher - reveals that the Harry Potter author's new book The Casual Vacancy is 'blackly comic, thought-provoking and constantly surprising'.

The plot has been disclosed as following Barry Fairweather, who dies unexpectedly in his early forties and leaves the little town of Pagford in shock.

Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils...Pagford is not what it first seems.

And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations?

With rumours bouncing around the internet that her new novel will be crime, The Casual Vacancy at first doesn't seem outwardly so. But with a release date of September 27, fans won't have long to wait for the 450 million-selling author's first foray into adult literature.
