Who wants to be a millionaire?

Three writers have joined the exclusive list of authors who have sold more than a million copies of a book

Joanne Harris, Jodi Picoult and John Boyne are the latest writers to become members of the book trade's "Millionaires Club" - authors who have seen at least one of their books pass the 1million sales barrier.

Chocolat, My Sister’s Keeper and The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas all reached the seven-figure barrier this year. All three have been adapted into films, which boosted their sales by around half a million each during the year of release.

Harris is the fifth British female novelist after J K Rowling, Helen Fielding, Kate Mosse and Victoria Hislop to join the Millionaires Club, while Boyne is only the second Irish novelist, after Cecelia Ahern, to become a member.

J K Rowling holds the crown, with all eight of her Harry Potter books passing the million mark. Other authors who have made the list with more than one of their books are Dan Brown with five, Stephenie Meyer with four, Stieg Larsson and Philip Pullman (both three), Julia Donaldson, Khaled Hosseini, Helen Fielding and J R R Tolkien (all two).
