The Affair, the latest Jack Reacher novel from the irrepressible Lee Child, is set six months before the first of the series’ instalments, Killing Floor. Still in the army, Reacher is sent to a remote town to help solve a murder that may have military connections. All the familiar elements are here, but we also discover how Reacher was set on the path he has been following in the preceding books. Hard boiled in style and written in the first person, Child’s narrative has the reader accompany Reacher as he tries to get to the bottom of the murder. Although you may be ahead of him once or twice, the solution is only revealed at the last minute of this gripping novel. Watch out for the midnight train…
