This fourth novel from Linda Green could quite possibly be the new One Day and will make readers want to go and read the back catalogue. And Then it Happened is the story of Mel and Adam Taylor, a couple blissfully in love with a beautiful daughter and a life that seems outwardly perfect – maybe a little too perfect for Mel, who spends every day worrying that the worst is going to happen. She takes a raincoat even if a heat wave is forecast and does not want to make a big deal of celebrating their tenth anniversary in case it tempts fate.  It is shortly before this date that the worst does indeed happen, an accident that nobody could have predicted or prepared for. The plot really makes you stop to wonder how you would cope: would you be completely selfless like Mel, or would you follow the lead of the other characters involved?
The story is told from both Mel and Adam’s perspective, how two different people see the same thing but tell a different tale. As well as the main tragic story, there are also two underlying stories happening: one that is compelling, one annoyingly obvious, but not annoying enough to deter reading this book. Highly recommended.
