If you've grown tired of paranormal romances with vampires and werewolves but still like your fiction on the dark side, Anna Dressed in Blood could be the book you've been waiting for.
Theseus Cassio Lowood (or 'Cas' to his friends) has inherited his father's vocation: he kills ghosts. But not just any ghosts – only the dangerous ones who kill, torture or otherwise hurt the living. He's travelled around the country for years, chasing down urban legends that turn out to be not so made-up after all. Despite his loving kitchen-witch mother and a grumpy cat, Cas is solitary, finding it safer to do his ghost-hunting alone. Soon after moving to Thunder Bay, Ontario, he discovers that his latest ghost – Anna Korlov, murdered in the 1950s as a teenager – is not going to be so easy to kill. Soon, Cas ends up with a Scooby Gang to help him: nerdy telepath Thomas, his grandfather Morfran (who, luckily, is an expert in voodoo) and beautiful queen bee Carmel. It all seems to be going well, until Cas realises that he has feelings for Anna.
The use of a male protagonist sets this apart from the usual crop of paranormal romances, and his brazen attitude pulls the story along. There are some gruesome descriptions, but overall it's rather a wholesome story. Recommended for fans of TV show Supernatural, this book is well-written, creepy and engaging, and the open ending suggests that a sequel may be on the horizon.
