Patrick Ness’ filling out of a sketched Siobhan Dowd book is one of the most touching reads of the year.
Complemented by some extraordinary textured black-and-white gothic illustration from Jim Kay, the story, in which a boy battles the internal demon (made flesh) born anxiety over his mother’s illness, is at once a fable and very modern. An equally meaningful read for adults and children of 9 and up.
