Fantastic Mr Dahl opens with Michael Rosen’s memory of meeting the great man, and promptly being ignored in favour of his son.
Rosen assumes a similar position in this book, ducking down from the adults’ eye line and speaking directly to children, explaining how parts of Roald’s life could have shaped his stories as well as introducing important ideas for decoding storytelling and creative writing. Though fans of Dahl’s work cover all ages, this is perfect for readers who are not yet ready to tackle the longer autobiographies like Boy and Going Solo. It is safe to say that big friendly Roald’s life as a writer, a dedicated father and husband, a lover or words and jokes, a war hero, a spy, and an inventor was quite fantastic indeed.
