Much to the dismay of parents worldwide, Horrid Henry continues to thrill children with his love for all things naughty and horrible. Here is his guide book to all things horrid, helpfully catalogued in alphabetical order; for example S is for Stinkbombs, which are ‘ideal for attacking Moody Margaret’s Secret Club’. Henry fanatics will be familiar with the yucky specifics of de-bagging and belcher squelchers but this book could help reluctant readers discover the terrible delights of Horrid Henry’s antics before tackling the full length books.
It is a great showcase for Francesca Simon’s delicious details that bring nightmarish Henry to life and Tony Ross’s classic illustrations perfectly describe these grim characters. As well as the colour pictures throughout the text there are double spread picture scenes crammed with action as funny as any of the stories. Despite some repetitive entries, the book is a veritable pick’n’mix of all things Henry. For new fans this could direct them to seek out further stories whilst avid Henry followers (and members of the Purple Hand Gang) could spend hours quizzing each other on horrid knowledge and Henry facts.
You could say it also introduces indexing and referencing systems to children…but Henry would never allow such a wonderfully horrible book to be used for something so boring!
