Jon Klassen's first picture book, I Want My Hat Back, was far and away the best of its type last year. This follow-up explores roughly similar territory.
A naughty little fish has nabbed a hat from a sleeping big fish. The little fish is sure he's got away with it, but his thoughts are directly at odds with the illustrations, which show the big fish hot on his trail and closing in. No prizes for guessing how this ends. With a rare and admirable sense of minimalism, this is a crash course in dramatic irony and dead-pan humour for the under fives. Thrillingly original and subtle in its approach to storytelling, Klassen's illustrations make this a gorgeous, stylish item in its own right.
