The Lives She Left Behind is a sequel but it isn’t essential to have read Ferney, James Long’s much loved time-slippage romance, to enjoy this one.

It involves a love story that spans the ages, centring on Ferney and Gally who are reincarnated with full memories. Teenagers Jo and Luke are drawn to the village of Penselwood and to each other, gradually they learn why and through their eyes the history of the area is described with stunning detail. These old souls have to come to terms with the difficulties of living in the modern age, to face up to the pain they have caused others and try to find a way forward. The narrative is beautiful and compelling: Long’s ambitious story is simply unforgettable.
