In the usual course of events, children believe that their parents will protect them, but in the Enemy series everyone aged 14 or over has been affected by a plague.

Most are killed by it, but those who live are half crazed, sated only by eating the flesh of children. Medieval defences protect a group of children living in the Tower of London but the adults are massing. A small contingent of children sets off to clear the area of this increasing threat, and one of their number makes the ultimate sacrifice. There is much gore and violence in The Sacrifice, keeping lovers of the series happy. Story threads are drawn together and causes of the plague hinted at, setting us up for the next book.
