Christopher Buckley’s latest novel is a razor sharp lampooning of the intertwined worlds of politics, diplomacy, lobbying and espionage.
They Eat Puppies, Don't They? involves conspiracy and counterplot as a Washington lobbyist teams up with a Neo Con to start a rumour that the Chinese plan to assassinate the Dalai Lama. The main protagonist, ‘Bird’ McIntyre, writes appalling sub-standard Tom Clancy-type thrillers in his spare time and indeed They Eat Puppies, Don’t They? is an extremely cuttingly witty parody of that genre. Buckley ratchets up the farcical plotlines with great aplomb, but as with all good satire an element of truth is never far away. With a cast of over-the-top but believable characters Buckley has fashioned an entertaining hilarious black comedy page turner.
