What the Family Needed is an ambitious and magical tale following the history of a family over the duration of one lifetime.
Their struggles and issues are normal ones: childhood, relationships, ageing. But there is one difference – for some reason, at an ideal and necessary moment, each of them finds themselves temporarily blessed with a magical power. Both moving and imaginative, this book is a delight: the characters are likeable and their decisions and life events push the narrative forward at a swift pace. Each character is given their own chapter, which can be a little disconnecting, but the dénouement is skilfully orchestrated and leaves the reader wishing only that the novel were longer so more time could be spent in this world with these characters.
